ROBERT BURNS: RIGHT PLACE, RIGHT TIME
In July of 1786, Robert Burns’ Poems: Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect was published. The attention toward this ‘Heaven-Taught Ploughman’ was immediate, catapulting the 27-year-old from Alloway into the Edinburgh literati and soon worldwide readership. This talk will explore the circumstances around this meteoric rise, discussing the details of his education and use of language, the publishing runs of the early editions of Poems, and finally how Burns’ voice aligned with the continuing developments of Scottish national identity at the time, thus transforming him into an image of Scottishness still alive today. Discover the story behind the supper.
