Michele Chiarlo Barbera, Piedmont, Italy

Michele Chiarlo’s roots are firmly planted in Piedmont, with 7 generations of wine growers prior to starting this winery in 1956, which is still family-owned. Wine Spectator has recently named Chiarlo one of Italy’s “Top 100 Great Producers”. His Barbera shows sweet blackberry, plum and pomegranate fruit and, as it unfolds across the palate, it expresses fresh, vibrant floral with a top note of intermingled spice.

“Casa de Casal de Loivos” Lemos & Van Zeller 2009, Portugal

The Van Zeller name is one of the most important and prominent in Portugal. Cristiano van Zeller was previously the owner of Quinta do Noval, which he sold in 1993 prior to starting his own winery, Quinta do Vale Dona Maria. Focusing on small production wines from old, top vineyards, the Casa de Casal de Loivos estate has been in Cristiano’s wife’s family (Joana Lemos) for over 150 years. The 2009 vintage is of special character with bright, rich flavours of dark fruits, spice and smoky notes. The complexity of the wine shows right through the long finish. This is the first time the wine has been offered for sale in British Columbia.
